Quick Answer
Collect loot, deliver it to Barry, meet your quota, then escape. In the Playtest, you start a shift by taking the elevator in the main lobby. This Escape from Playtime tutorial walks you through that basic loop, with glowsticks and Sketch-A-Map helping you find Barry again.
How do you play Escape from Playtime for the first time?
Start with the tutorial option to learn the basics, then collect and deliver items during a shift instead of just wandering for loot.
Choose your starting option
The Playtest main menu has Create Game, Join Game, Single Player, and Tutorial options. Choose Tutorial for the introductory playthrough.

Take the lobby elevator
In the Playtest, the elevator in the main lobby starts your shift. Head there when you are ready to begin the collection run.

Gather loot within the allotted time, bring it to Barry the cart, and fulfill the tribute quota before escaping. The collection run serves the mission of Escape from Playtime The Voice.
Mark your route while exploring. Carrying more loot only helps the quota when you get it back to Barry.
How does Escape from Playtime gameplay handle tribute?
Put your items into Barry and send him off to submit tribute; loading the cart and sending it are separate actions.
- Load Barry. In the Playtest, the bottom progress bar helps you track how much more tribute you need.
Barry and the tribute progress bar appear together on screen.

Look above Barry for the quota number during tribute submission.
Shown at 04:51 in Nized’s video.- Account for the return trip. In the Playtest, Barry takes time to return after you send him. Plan around that wait rather than expecting to load him again immediately.
Quota displays differ between versions. The September 30, 2026 Beta used a green bar at the bottom right. The October 8, 2026 update plan described blue progress for items loaded but not sent, yellow progress after sending, and an Amount / Quota display above Barry. Treat those colors according to the interface you are playing with.
The Beta exit hatch required manual opening. The October 8, 2026 plan changed that to automatic opening once the quota was reached. Check your exit after meeting quota rather than assuming the old hatch interaction applies to your version.
Why can't you reach 2500 in the Escape from Playtime tutorial?
Because 2500 isn't a tutorial goal. It's the quota for your first real shift after the tutorial. In a launch-week playthrough, the tutorial ends and the team is told straight away: "That was a tutorial. So our fee is now 2500." So don't grind the tutorial for it. Finish it and start a proper shift.
What to know about the quota once you're in a real run:
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Quota goes up | Every new shift asks for more tribute than the last |
| Fill it in one shift | If you leave short, it doesn't carry over and counts against you |
| Three strikes per run | Players playing with a developer describe three total strikes before the run is over |
| Exit opens on quota | Once Barry is full to quota, the exit hatch opens on its own |
The developers also added a percentage next to Barry's gauge, a blue bar for what's loaded but not yet sent, and item value tooltips, so you can check how close you are before you head back. More players means more ground covered, so 2500 is a lot easier with a full team.
What Escape from Playtime tips help you survive a shift?
Keep a route back to Barry and decide which items you can afford to surrender as tribute.
Place glowsticks strategically so your team can regroup and navigate back to the cart. Splitting up can help you collect more loot, but leave a trail before you lose each other. Sketch-A-Map opens a minimap showing your surroundings, teammates, and Barry, giving you another way to orient yourself.
Items have a real tradeoff: you can give them to Barry or use them to stay alive.
Give an item to Barry
You turn the item into tribute toward the quota. Choose this when you want to advance the collection objective and can spare the item's survival use.
Keep an item for survival
You retain its practical use instead of handing it over. Sewing Kit, Antidote, and Poppy-gel Injection support teammates; Hoppy Ears, Go-Go Goop, and Bounce Pad help mobility. Keep useful support when you need it, while remembering that the quota still needs deliveries.
In the Playtest, leaving a shift early or missing its tribute quota before time ran out earned a penalty point. Getting to an exit early was not the same as completing the collection objective.
